Middle School Chess League Proposal

10-week season

Day and time for matches Monday 3:30-4:30.  Season schedule November 4th-February 3rd.

All matches will take place on online, so no transportation required to play in matches.  Schools will need to join a Zoom link for match though to ensure fair play: https://zoom.us/j/9786613380

Match format:  Five boards per school.  Board 1 from School A will play board 1 from School B.  Board 2 plays board 2, board 3 plays board 3, etc.  In case of a tie due to draws, first tie-breaker will be which school won board 1.  In case of that game being a draw, board 2 winner will decide the match, etc.

Games will take place on chess.com.  The chess club advisor for each school will need to enter student’s chess.com usernames in a spreadsheet the day before the match.  The home team will send challenges to the away teams for each match.  I will assist with helping schools learn how to send challenge requests.  Here is the url to send challenges:  https://www.chess.com/play/online#challenge=20m5s%7Cchess&member=USERNAME

Where it says username, you would type in your opponent’s chess.com username there, that’s why it’s essential that every team enters the chess.com usernames of the players for the match in the spreadsheet.

All students will need access to an individual laptop, no players can play on the same computer.  Also, please check if your school allows access to chess.com.  I am aware that many schools have chess.com blocked.  If possible, please remove the block for league matches.  Chess.com is the best website for this type of event in my opinion.

At the end of the season, there will be gold, silver and bronze medals for boards 1-5.  This will be based on results in the league.  Whichever board 1 scores the most points would receive the gold medal, second highest points silver medal and third highest points bronze medal.  This will apply to all boards.

The entry fee for the league is $500 per school for the entire season.  This is a great opportunity to either bolster or build a chess program at your school and give students something to look forward to by being able to play students at other schools.
